Meet Katy

Katy Allan is the wife and boy mom-of-three behind the wildly popular Savoring the Flavoring brand.

And when we say “wildly popular,” we mean “moderately appealing.” And when we say “brand,” we actually just mean “intermittently updated food blog.” Potato potahto.

If you’re sick of all the labels and extreme diets and people telling you what you can or cannot eat, you’ve come to the right place. Katy doesn’t do diets – too many rules, too much deprivation. She thinks diets are hogwash, a set-up for inevitable failure. In fact, she’d even argue that depriving yourself all the time is actually just a one-way ticket to Bingeville. And trust us, you do not want to go there. It’s like Vegas; it’s fun at first, and then you wake up the next morning with a hangover, covered in shame.

Instead of pointless agony, Katy’s theory is this: cook your own food. Eat good, nutritious, homemade meals made from quality, fresh, whole-food ingredients; give your body what it needs and it will do. its. thang. No diets required.

You have burning questions, right? Everyone is asking, who is this Katy?? And how did she develop such a healthy relationship with food? Well, it’s simple, actually. She just really likes to eat food. In fact, it’s pretty much always been the center focus of her universe. As a young girl, she’d climb up on the counter as her mother cooked dinner and request to smell each and every spice she was using that evening. She never let her father stick a batch of his homemade blueberry muffins in the oven without first relinquishing the empty batter-bowl to her to lick clean. Her first word wasn’t “Dada” or “Mama” in dutiful homage to the loins from which she sprang forth; it was “cheese”.

Yes, from the very beginning, food has been Katy’s life. Luckily, as the daughter of a dietitian, she was also taught from a very impressionable, young age about the virtues of healthy eating, and that moderation is key. Her goal: to make the Standard American Diet a little less SAD, one home-cooked, real-food recipe at a time.

Food means two things to Katy: nourishment and enjoyment. It’s meant to fuel both her body and her soul, not something to fear or avoid. But with the deluge of conflicting messages in today’s social-media-driven world, eating healthfully can seem insanely confusing, not to mention ridiculously expensive and out-of-reach for the average consumer. It doesn’t have to be this complicated. We don’t need $50-per-ounce adaptogens or astronomically overpriced specialty foods to be healthy. In fact, it can be as simple as just making the majority of your meals at home with nourishing, quality ingredients.

In this blog, Katy shares what she eats and how she feeds her family of five. Nutrient-rich, home-cooked meals and snacks, plus some indulgences and homemade treats (Because this girl loves some sweets, and she’s passed that gene on to her innocent offspring. Monster.). Also, there’s the occasional outfit or hair tip here and there. For those days when she’s actually deigned to wear something that’s not stretchy and has not, in fact, been fished from the dirty-clothes hamper.

Also, this entire thing was written about Katy, by Katy. In third person. So clearly, she’s not to be trusted.
