I’m typically not a huge bread person – not because I’m scared of gluten or carbs, mind you (screw that), but just because most breads don’t really get my flag up the pole, flavor-wise. (Add a generous fresh butter schmear into the equation, however, and we have lift-off.) There are a few exceptions though, this beer bread being one of them.
This is the loaf I do when I make a big crockpot of chili and decide last-minute that I want something nummy to dunk in it, because it’s deeeeeeLISH and it’s hearty, but still soft. Plus, my Irish Catholic husband always has beer in the fridge, so I always have all the ingredients on hand. Everyone goes ape over it. So when I forgot to buy bread this week, and it was the night before the first day 0f school, with my babies requesting turkey + pepperoni sandwiches, I knew exactly where to turn in order to avoid bra-ing back up and trudging out into the dark night in search of sandwich bread. Beer bread. About five minutes of prep time and a 40-minute stint in the oven would be all that stood between me and a raging bread boner. And not unlike Alexander Skarsgard shirtless, it never lets me down.
This isn’t one of those “free” recipes – gluten-free, grain-free, sugar-free, dairy-free, etc. Since we don’t have issues with any of those things, we’re good to go, and since this loaf is comprised of just a few simple ingredients, I feel great about it. But the good news is, it’s pretty sub-able. If you’re gluten-free, use all-purpose gluten-free flour and your fave gluten-free beer. If you’re cutting back on sugar, just use 1 tbsp of honey. If you’re dairy-free, just use olive or coconut oil, or even ghee. Play around. Do you, you know?
And because I know I’ll get these questions – no, it will not get your kids drunk (the alcohol burns off in the oven), and no, it does not taste overwhelmingly like beer. I’m not a beer fan at all, and this bread gives me alllllll the tingles. Try it and tell me what y’all think.
It’s delicious! Baked it and hour ago and half of it is gone! I do have a questions how do you store it ? Much love from germany
Hi Michellé! I’m so glad you love it!! And I can only imagine the fantastic beer you can get your hands on there in Germany! I store it in a ziploc or lidded container on the counter. It’s usually gone within two or three days for us, but if not, I’d move it to the fridge to prolong its shelf life a bit. 🙂
